The main town of Scarborough is nestled in the foothills on the Southeastern side . The scenery in the south is fairly unremarkable, except for the mangroves and the shallow reefs of the Marine Park at Buccoo. Leaving Scarborough to venture northwards reveal dynamic vistas of sloping hillsides and gravely beaches.

The rain forests quickly become evident along the Main Ridge. This is, as the name implies, a rocky backbone running the length of Tobago and is also the location of the first legally instituted forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere.

The Tobago layout

Tobago’s global coordinates are 11 ° north of the Equator and 60 ° west longitude. The island itself measures roughly twenty-seven miles long by an average three miles wide. Geologists agree that Tobago lies on an eastward moving tectonic plate which was adjacent to the Lake Maracaibo region of western Venezuela. The plant and animal life of Tobago resembles those of that area more closely than even Trinidad, which is placed physically much closer to the South American mainland.

Temperatures average 84 ° Fahrenheit (29 C) during the day, and at night 74 ° (23 C) is the norm. The Tradewinds generally blow in from the northeast, with occasional shifts to either side of the compass. The water temperature is a mild 80 degrees on most days. This sausage shaped island lies on the fringe of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The pleasant western side is washed by the former, and the scenic eastern shore is bathed by wind driven waves of the latter.

map

The geological structure of the island is mainly volcanic rocks covered with a thin layer of topsoil over most of the hillsides to the northern end. The southern tip of Tobago is covered with coral and sand and is almost entirely flat. Most of the population lives on the southern end of Tobago. Maybe as much as ninety percent. The major vacation homes and hotels are situated in that area, as is the Crown Point International Airport.
