weding crowd The traditional wedding vows in Tobago are usually accompanied by huge parties, grand feastings, and lots of music. The bride and her groom also attend church, accept gifts, and drive around the island in a great show of opulence. This is as it should be in simple societies such as ours. There are other vesions of a Tobago wedding. As in the re-enactment of a typical late 17th century ceremony as may have occurred on the plantations.

The Tobago Heritage Festival which is usually held in the last fortnight of August each year, offers lucky visitors a chance to revisit with everyone else here, the historical dramatisations of life in this island under various conditions. The villages each undertake to show aspects of the colonial years under the British, French and the Dutch.

The Old time Tobago wedding has evolved as the major crowd pleaser for the Tobago Heritage Festival. Held in the rustic village Moriah, the re-enactment features skits of young courting couples enduring parental vetting, village gossips abusing the truth, and always, good local food linchpins the event.

Tobago music may upstage the food preparation as the historically important instruments are revitalisedin the Festival. One can sway to the fiddle as it shrills out the two-step, the tamboo-bamboo thudding pulsatingly, and to the tambrin in the background. The steel pan had not yet been invented nor introduced into those ceremonies, so its plays no large part.
